Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrel

Spermophilus lateralis. This species is abundant throughout the Colorado Rockies. It is usually quite tame and its behavior along with its coloration cause people to mistake it for a chipmunk. In size it is closer to the dimensions of a heavy-boned red squirrel. This individual was photographed near Estes Park, CO in late July, 2008.
