13-Lined Ground Squirrel

The 13-lined ground squirrel, Spermophilus tridecemlineatus, is the more common of two species of ground squirrels in Morgan County, Colorado. It is small, about the size of a chipmunk, and seems to prefer clay soils and grasses rather than softer sandy soils and more varied flora. This individual, photographed in southern Morgan County, wappeared to be in an advanced stage of pregnancy.
