Rough-winged swallows are common and widespread here on the plains. They nest in hollows and burrows including old bank swallow burrows and open pipes.

ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW HOLE
I observed a pair of rough-winged swallows using this hole in the prairie clay on a cut banking on a back road. The birds probably finished out an existing gopher or ground squairrel hole.

ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW AT THE DOOR
Here an adult rough-winged swallow visits the opening to its nest burrow in an exposed banking in eastern Morgan County, CO. Four pairs of rough-wings were nesting within a 20 yard stretch of ditch bank.
