LATE WINTER HORNED GREBE

Horned grebes winter in eastern Colorado but migrate farther north to breed. They are slow to change colors for breeding. This late March bird has only barely started to change into nuptial plumage.

This horned grebe was photographed cruising the shoreline of Pawnee Power Plant Reservoir in Morgan County, CO. It has acquired most of its breeding coloration, but still has a way to go.
