WESTERN GREBE

OOne of NE Colorado's two large grebes, the western's dark cap extends down over its red eyes and the bill is yellowish and slightly upturned beneath.

With its foot out of the water, this western grebe displays the fact that a grebe's toes are not connected by webbing. Instead each toe has lobed webbing like a series of canoe paddles.
